JJ - Blind Shepherd Mix
NJ/NYC border

Was Posted 1/31/02 on Urgent page

This lovely boy is about 5 years old, he's very sad and sweet, and he was in a small 18 cage kill shelter in Jersey city. He didn't  appear well kept and was very unhappy. He was formerly on the Urgent page with only a few days left to live, but has been rescued by a caring "mom" and is now in a temporary foster home. Watch for pictures of "JJ" in the next few days.

JJ update: I just wanted to forward the good news about the dog we saved from the jersey city shelter. He is on the way to getting healthy and is going to his forever home this weekend. Thanks to all on the list who were concerned. Linda

Blind GSD puppy in Cocoa, FL

Date Posted 1/30/02 - was posted on Puppy Adoptions page

Blind German Shepherd puppy needs a home. His age in this photo is about 6 weeks and now he is around 10 weeks. He is very friendly, happy and will be a very nice looking adult. I took him to a canine ophthalmologist and his diagnosis is Optical Nerve Hypoplasia. It is a defect of the optic nerve - the pup's optic nerve is only 1/3 the size that it should be. Therefore, there is no signal going from the eye to the brain saying 'this is an image you should see'. He is 100% blind although his sense of smell and hearing have already begun to guide him.

This was congenital and probably inherited but it is not degenerative, therefore it will never affect his life in other ways. The vet says the puppy does not even know that anything is wrong. He feels that the puppy should make a very special person a very special companion.

We are a Veterinarian Hospital that has 2 shepherd mix female puppies. One puppy is entirely blind (pink collar), she can see shadows and is very good with voices. The other puppy is blind in one eye . Both are very sweet and lovable with excellent temperaments. They are very friendly. The puppies are sisters and love to play together. They are approximately 5 months old. We need to find homes for both puppies as soon as possible as we fear they may be euthanized. Please help us save them.

You may call us at (508) 835-6258 or email: rjtashjian@acvmf.org or Skitt12@aol.com.

UPDATE April 20, 2002
I wanted to let you know that both puppies were adopted today by a wonderful
couple from Connecticut. They saw the puppies on your web page and contacted
us. They didn't want to split them up, so they took both. I can't thank you
enough for your help and the help of your web site. Your quick action on
posting and the continuous follow ups with information kept these dogs from
being put to sleep. Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Healy
