Forever Homes At Last 3

Milo-Blind Bichon Frise-Connecticut

Milo is a 8 year old neutered male. He has lived most of his life in a kennel. He is blind due to owner neglect. He was released by his owner into a shelter where he has spent the last year. He is on medication that can be mixed in with his food and has ointment twice a day so his eyes do not become
dry. He has been started on a weight reduction diet. He had been attacked by large dogs on several occasions in the shelter and has become aggressive around other dogs. Milo needs a loving owner that can teach him to be a house dog again. Milo barks when he needs to be taken out. If taken out every few hours, he does not have a problem. A house with young children is not recommended because of Milo's disability.  Milo has lots of potential and could be referred to as a "fixer upper".  Milo is being fostered in Connecticut.

Milo's foster family decided he was tooooo special to let go and has adopted him!!

Bubba-Visually Impaired  Chesapeake Bay Retriever-Elkton, MD

Date Posted 4/25/2001

Bubba, Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Bubba is a sweet, handsome boy. He has a beautiful body. He is affectionate, loving and a real funny goof-ball. He rides great in
car...jumps right in and settles down. Seems to love water, has gone right in a creek by our house and waded around. This guy was in a kill shelter but they kept him for over 8 weeks because they loved him. They also had him neutered and vetted and microchipped because they really wanted to do everything they could to make him attractive for adoption. He does have vision problems/impairment, but he can maneuver steps with no problem, gets around the house fine, and avoids trees, walls, fences etc. I'm certain he sees shapes. Hearing is excellent. He is in an extra large crate during the night and when we are at work. He does fine in crate. He is fun and goofy
and has 2 favorite toys, a ball with bell and a squeeky football, which he actually plays by himself, throwing them up in the air for himself and barking at them....very cute and funny. He is completely ready to be adopted. He has every shot, including bordatella, he is Heart worm negative, on preventative, neutered and the shelter even had him Microchipped! Bubba loves everyone and everything. Can you give him a loving forever home?

Georgia Bubba's foster mom let me know that her and her husband Dave decided no-one could love this big guy as much as they could :-)

Whisper-Blind Bichon Frise-Connecticut

Whisper is a ten year old neutered male. He is totally blind from cataracts. He was found wandering around in the streets, confused and frightened. He came to us terrified and shaking. He responds to holding and comforting. He loves to be cuddled and give kisses. He is so gentle and loving that it is hard to put him down. He manages to find his way around with verbal direction until he becomes familiar with new territory. He is housebroken. He touches the heart of anyone he meets. He is good with other dogs and cats. He would do best in a home with older children or adults because of his disability and his need to feel safe. He will bring lots of love to a home that can give him the same. Anyone who adopts this little boy is will feel blessed to have him. He is very special. He is being fostered in Connecticut.

Carol from Small Paws Rescue let me know Whisper went to his forever home on July 18th

Michiko-Blind Japanese Chin @ Hearts United for Animals

Michiko is a red and white Japanese Chin. She is adorably friendly and loves attention. She loves to cuddle and be held close. She gives millions of kisses. She explores her foster home slowly on her own, always coming back to her foster mom for love. She is a supersweet cuddle bug. Michiko is blind, she has only a few teeth left, and she weighs 6 pounds. She was born in 1993 and spent her life in a puppymill.

This is a crosspost from the Hearts United for Animals site for adoption info on Michiko please go to http://www.hua.org/lookhtml/Michiko.html

Linda from HUA let me know plans are being finalized to get Michiko to her forever home within the next 2 weeks

Nikiah (blind) and Keota - Siberian Huskies

Nikiah is a black/white, blue eyed, 5 year old neutered male, up to date on shots, heartworm negative and on heartworm preventative. This shy and sensitive sweetheart wants only to be loved and feel secure. He was diagnosed blind due to toxin induced glaucoma after a lymes vaccine, he has been dependant on his brother Keota and is now stepping out on his own to see the world as all blind dogs do...with his heart. He would love to find a family willing to let him curl up close at night and who would offer him the understanding and guidance needed to train with sled terms. Nikiah has good house manners and gets along well with other dogs as he romps in the play yard. Are you a loving family worthy of this very special boy? Please respond to if you can adopt. This pet is: up to date with routine shots, already house trained, altered

Keota is full of energy and mischief in grand Siberian Style. He is 5 yo, neutered, utd, and heartworm negative and on preventative. He arrived at Angels with his brother Nikiah but has found playing with all the dogs is much more fun. He loves to run and is diligent in keeping a step ahead of the pack, he is gentle and affectionate with humans and would love running with a team, what he lacks in experience he makes up for in enthusiasm. Keota would also be content with a secure playyard and a few playmates, although reported to be an escape artist he has never challenged the fence here. He would be happy to let his brother Nikiah tag along but also content with a home of his own if he has a lot of one on one attention and exercise. If you feel you are worthy of being Keota's new family,

After a VERY long wait these two boys are heading to their new forever home in Cinncinnati Ohio the weekend of July 14th Be happy boys you deserve it!!!

Trooper-Blind Aussie-Dallas/Fort Worth

My 5 children and I were driving during a thunderstorm at the beginning of March, and saw this dog huddled up next to a place of business, soaking wet and very scared. I pulled up to see if her owner was around, and there was no one. The dog followed me, and I noticed that her right eye was not there, but
some tissue was hanging out of the socket. We got her into our van and dried her off and took her home. After a couple of hours, we took her to our veterinarian, who did surgery on her eye. She also tested positive for heartworms. Knowing that we did not have the funds to help the dog, I called Operation Kindness, and between them and my veterinarian, and about $150 on our part, we were able to perform the heartworm treatments, and she is very healthy now. The treatments were very painful for Trooper, but that is where she got her name! My oldest decided that since Trooper has been through so much, she should be called Trooper.

This dog is the sweetest natured, most well-behaved I have ever had. Even though she is totally blind, she doesn't know it! She goes up and down the stairs at our house, she gets around wonderfully. She is housebroken and has been spayed. The veterinarian said she was 5 to 6 years old. She has learned
her name, and she has learned that when I say "up" she must step up, when I say "down", she steps down, when I say "careful" she is going to run into something, so she stops and goes around it! Trooper does not leave my side, except at bedtime. She sleeps on the couch and when I greet her in the morning, she is all wiggles and whines. I like to take her to the park, so that she can run. She won't do it alone, but I run ahead of her, slapping my hand on my leg, and she will run along with me. I just 'know' that she feels a kind of freedom when she runs. When I walk anywhere, I just pat my leg so that she will know where I am and where I am going.

We must find the right home for Trooper. We love her dearly, but I have 5 children ranging in age from 3 to 9, and this household is too noisy and busy for her. We also have 3 cats, one of which likes to scare Trooper. Trooper loves to try to chase her, but cannot get her and will run into things. But if the cat swats at her, it scares her very badly. I believe she would really do well in a home with just a couple of older children, or none. And a home with no CATS! Probably no other pets, either. Poor Trooper really needs some peace and quiet, and some loving, caring 'parents' to take care of her. You wouldn't know she is blind, except that she does not run, or chase balls, etc. She has a little stuffed 'baby' that she shakes and chews on. Also, Trooper is very afraid of thunderstorms, because of her trauma when we found her, I suppose. The veterinarian gave us sedatives to give her if needed, but I haven't had to use one; I just lay with her and she is fine.

Kristi let me know Trooper has found a home with a young couple who has a brother for Trooper to play with.

Judy-Visually Impaired @ Hearts United for Animals Shelter-NE

Judy has suffered greatly in her short life. She had some serious injury that caused her to loose her eye sight in one eye. Then she was abandoned in Missouri while her puppies were still nursing. There was not much hope for them. HUA heard about this special mom and her puppies and went down and got them. We soon discovered that Judy had heartworms. And if that were not enough the first treatment for heartworms did not work and she had to go through the sickening treatment again.

But all Judy's hard times are behind her. She is ready for a home where she will be adored forever. Judy loves people and is very smart. She wants to be involved in what is going on and participate in activities. Judy weighs about 20 pounds and is about 2 years old. She has been spayed and is current on health care.

Jenny from HUA emailed me to say that a couple from Fargo, ND had seen Judy on the Blind Dog Adoption Pages and where driving down on June 29 to meet her.  They fell in love with her!!! They not only adopted her but adopted another dog Spud

Possible Peke-Blind- Appomattox, VA

Hello, I am with the Animal Welfare Action Group in Appomattox, VA; we organized 1 1/2 years ago, mainly to try and develop a low cost spay neuter program for our rural region but somehow along the way we ended up getting all kinds of calls about animals in jeopardy. Yesterday the local animal warden called me that he picked up a blind pekinese. I begged him not to take it to the local pound where no one is in attendance EVER.

He actually brought the dog here, she is blonde (maybe she is a tibetan spaniel and not a pekinese but I can't tell the difference) Her eyes appear to be surgically removed and lids sutured shut. She has no scar or scar tissue lumps under the skin, to evidence that she was ever spay. She stunk to high heaven, was heavily matted, had ticks & fleas, poop stuck to her anus, and her toenails curled up into her foot pads...this is one neglected little dog.

We found a groomer who clipped and bathed her for us this morning (for free) and we are getting her a dhlpp-c and bordetella vaccine this afternoon.  She is very friendly, though after the very long grooming session and bath, she became a bit irritable, as we discovered some bad bite wounds scars under the mats and one had abcessed.  We took her to the vet and cleaned it up. She must have had enough by then!

She is snoring soundly now however back at my home! She hasn't had any accidents in my house in 24 hours though mostly I have her crated. I have not let her mingle with my 5 dogs It is not possible for me to keep her very long. The groomer felt she was 2 or 3 years old, as do I, the vet thought she maybe older like 4 or 5.  She is bold and will walk intrepidly if she can hear you walking first or talking to her. She is loving, the perfect lap dog. Please advise as to any avenues we could take to find her a foster or permanent home.

Sincerely,
Magda

6/16/01 This sweet girl soon will be on her way to her new home in Nova Scotia.  She also has a new name Honey Bear!!! I'm sure we will hear updates since her new mom is Colleen, a member of the Blind Dog list

Concord NH-Visually Impaired Lhasa Apso and lifelong Doxie companion

Flopsy(6yr old visually impaired Lhasa) and Dreyfus, her 10yr old Dachshund longtime companion where first posted on the Urgent Need Page in the hopes of keeping them together.  Sadly that wasn't possible and they went to their respect breed rescues

Happily these 2 didn't stay in rescue very long.  Kathie (who had Flopsy) let me know she found a wonderful home Memorial Weekend.  Dreyfus had found  his home the week before

Callie Mae-Blind Dachshund-Texas

Little is known about how Callie Mae became blind, but it is thought that she was born blind. To look at her sweet face, you cannot tell she is blind as she has wonderful big brown eyes. She loves to cuddle and give kisses, enjoys being carried, napping on the couch with her special human, has not ever met a stranger and is very outgoing to all humans. Ideally, a home with an older couple or single that is calm, quiet and is home all day to monitor her needs (she is not housebroken, the last home that had her, left her outside all day and nite!). It was shared with me that she had been through at least three homes that the previous owner knew of.

If you have a special place in your heart and home for this wonderful little girl, please contact me!! She is in Texas with me (Christine McEntyre - Dachshund Rescue), any long distance travel is strongly discouraged to reduce any stress she will undoubtedly have during her transition, so homes near or in Texas are preferred. Call me at 830-367-5741 or email me at diamdoxrescue@juno.com  Thank you!

Christine McEntyre from Dachshund Rescue let me now on 5/24/01 that Callie Mae found a great forever home with a New Mexico couple.

8 Week old Blind Lab-MI

My brother in-laws lab had puppies 8 weeks ago, he's gotten rid of all except the puppy born blind, she is a beautiful, yellow lab, with a  sweet and loving personality.  He wants to take her out back and put her down, I believe she has a  purpose and with the right owner she will lead a full and rewarding  life. I am expecting my fourth child in 3 weeks and don't feel led to  take on the responsibility, nor will I have the time to commit to this  precious creature to ensure that she is properly loved and cared for,
but I cringe at the thought of this innocent creature losing it's life, for lack of sight when she has so much to offer the right person. Time  is of the essence, we live in Lapeer County Michigan, do you know of any  local organizations that adopt and place these special needs pets?
 Sincerely,
 Sheri

Donna Palen a Blind Dog list member adopted this sweet girl who she named Honey

Spot Visually Impaired-Staley, NC

Spot is a 7-8 year old Cocker/Setter mix. Rescued from being a stray, almost starved to death, she is now looking for a new home. She was blinded for weeks from her hair matted over her eyes. Between that and her age, she is rapidly going blind. She can currently see light and dark. She is fine with cats, and is OK with older kids. But as her sight is going, she is very snappy about being grabbed suddenly. If you talk to her and let her know you are coming, she's fine with being picked up, but I wouldn't trust her with a small child grabbing her suddenly. She is housebroken, and she does fine with other dogs/

Kitty from HappyHills let me know Spot was adopted on 5/20/01

Angus-Formerly at Happy Hills

Kitty had also let me know previously that Angus a Blind Black Mini Schnauzer had been placed in a loving home.  Here is a recent update she sent:

Thought you'd enjoy hearing about Angus.  You had him listed on your page for us for a while.  He was adopted  by a wonderful lady in Washington State, who flew him home from NC!  She has taken him to a veterinary ophthalmic specialist (sp?) who thinks Angus was blind from birth.  However, he thinks there is an 80% chance that he can do surgery and fix the problem so Angus can see.  There are a couple more tests to be done, but she has said that if the tests prove positive she is going to go ahead with the surgery.  We'll know mid-May I'll keep you posted if you like!

Thanks for all you do for the animals!!

-Kitty

New Update!!! Kitty had a wonderful update. Angus had his surgery and now he can see!!! To read more please go to his page http://www.happyhills2.homestead.com/the_miracle_of_angus.html

Brandy-Visually impaired Cocker Spaniel-Oakdale, NY

I live in Oakdale, NY. I have a 5 year old  almost Blind Cocker Spaniel named Brandy that was left at the vets office. He was there for 2 weeks. His owners supposedly could not keep him due to a move. He has a few medical problems that are making him hard to place with a family.

Brandy is a very mellow dog.  He is friendly, playful, and loves his belly rubbed.  He is a very lovable dog and very good with children. He needs a home with no other dogs or cats in order for him to be happy. I think because he is blind that may be why he is intolerant of other dogs and cats.

Brandy was diagnosed with juvenile cataracts in 1995. At that time he had a complete cataract in the left eye and a partial one in the left.  In 1996 Brandy had surgery to remove the cataracts, but it was unsuccessful.  In January 97, he started having chronic ear problems and ocular discharge. He needs Tearfair in his eyes 2-4 times a day. He has ear problems and they need constant cleaning. He also has a minor skin irritation that requires a pill every 2-3 days to control itching.

Brandy was adopted the week of 5/15/01

Cody-Blind Collie in North Carolina

Cody Brown lost his sight at the age of two and now is five. Somehow Cody showed back up at his original owners home who now breeds Labs and could not keep him. He has been treated for heartworms and is now negative. He will be neutered in March and will have his teeth cleaned at the same time. Cody expresses a real love for men and little boys. He uses the doggie door and gets around just like my other Collies, just a little slower.

Jean Smith from Piedmont Collie Rescue let me know Cody went to his forever home the first week in May 2001

Janet-Blind Welsh Corgi-North Texas

Janet is a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. She is just under 2 years of age, and  came into our rescue program when her owner died, and she was taken to the pound. A kind shelter worker saved her from euthanization, and notified us of her plight.

Janet is a petite Corgi, weighing just about 20 pounds. Janet is definitely a companion dog. She will sit in your lap for hours, and really depends a great deal on human contact. She can be a bit aggressive with other dogs if she feels threatened, however, she also greatly enjoys canine companionship. She does not seem to have a male or female preference. Her best friend is another female Pembroke.

Janet is very well housetrained, and crate trained. She loves to go for walks, and gets around really well. She can jump onto beds and sofas, and basically follows her chosen human around constantly. She will quietly lay at your feet while you read or work on the computer. Janet likes an orderly house, things out of place give her reason for concern. Shoes and open doors can startle her. She has just enough sight to see shadows and large objects. Her new owners will need to be aware of this, and not coddle her too much. Janet likes to know that her humans are in charge, and that she need not worry. Janet loves to play, and has a very clownish side to her personality. She definitely prefers women to men, but with time and patience, she will warm up to anybody. She is such a lovable dog.

Judy Aldridge from North Texas Corgi Rescue says that Janet found her perfect home and is doing really well.
