Helen - Blind Coonhound in Georgia ADOPTED!

Adopted April 15, 2004

Quite a few weeks ago I adopted Helen, the blind coonhound listed under your adoption 5.  I see that she is not listed as adopted.  Helen has ABSOLUTELY FOUND HER FOREVER HOME HERE WITH US.  Although she was originally rescued by PACC and fostered by Michelle Westervelt, when a suitable home was not found she was placed at Caring for Creatures for permanent sanctuary.  When I inquired about her, that was where I was directed.

On April 15th, Dianna from Caring for Creatures drove Helen down to Georgia, and I drove up from Punta Gorda Florida.  Helen is now living here with us and our two sighted dogs, Fezziwig and Blossom (both humane society dogs), two cats, and three large birds.

Helen is a PEACH!  She is as sweet as the day is long!  She gives the best kisses of any dog I have ever known, and we are very grateful for her presence in our lives. She is attending obedience class now, using all positive reinforcement, and once Helen gets beyond her hound stubbornness she does wonderfully.  She plays well with all the other dogs and is friendly to all people.

In addition to being blind, Helen is deaf in one ear.  Consequently, she can hear things, but she can not tell the location of the sound.  We are working with this by teaching her directional words so she can find what she is looking for and can be directed.  Helen assesses our upcoming activities by smelling my shoes.  She recognizes the hang around the house sandals, the work shoes and sandals, and the "dogs are going for a walk" shoes!

We are attending obedience class with Helen where positive reinforcement is the name of the game.  Helen does very well, although she can be a very stubborn dog at times!  She is such a sweet lady, a true PEACH.  She gets along with all of the dogs and people in class, plays well, and is delightful.  Helen gives the best doggie kisses I have ever had, and she is clearly becoming very trusting of me and very devoted to me.  She embodies the saying,"Blind Dogs See with Their Heart", and we are deeply grateful for her presence in our lives.

Thank you for your website, where I found our beautiful Helen.

Currie-12 week old Blind Beagle-Enoree, SC

Date Posted 11/22/01

Currie is a 12 week old purebred Beagle puppy. Most likely dumped by a breeder. She has been to the ophthalmologist and evaluated, she is not a candidate for surgery as her retinas are in terrible condition, for too severe for reattachment. I pulled Currie from the local shelter the day before she was scheduled for euthanasia. We immediately pursued treatment.

Currie is an active girl, loves her wicker basket, plays a bit rough, she slept during the entire 300 mile round trip to the ophthalmologist, loves toys, not yet housebroke, she comes when called, know the location of her food and water bowl here, she is not afraid of being picked up suddenly or of anything for that matter.

Currie was spayed before leaving the shelter, she is receiving her vaccinations and has been wormed. She is healthy other then her blindness. She is currently playing with the 6 other puppies we have here that are up for adoption.

Mick-Blind 4 month old puppy-Twig, MN

Mick was born blind, we don't know why.  I believe he was given up by owner because of this.  Mick is only 4 months old and has an excellent temperment.  He is a cattle dog and terrier mix. He gets along with everyone.  Mick is vaccinated and is being neutered on 11-15.

Update: 11/21/01

We learned from an eye surgeon that Mick's sight loss was most likely caused by an untreated eye infection he had as a young pup (so really upsetting knowing a human could have prevented his blindness, but instead caused it).  He also said a cornea scrape surgery could be done that would run around $900, and wouldn't guarantee he'd see much (maybe light/darks and some shapes).  This surgery also might not do anything, or reverse after time.  However, he does get around his surroundings fine once he learns where everything is.

Also, the people who had his litter gave him away (along with the other pups), and he was taken by a
young guy who pawned him off on a friends mom, and that's who we got him from. (I didn't know the whole story at first, sorry).

Melissa MacLean from Northern Lights Animal Rescue wrote on 12/2/01: "Just wanted to say a big THANKS for putting Mick on your site and let you know he was adopted. He was adopted by a single female nurse.  She wasn't at all concerned about his blindness and was just in love with his personality.  Sounds like it's a good match. Thanks again.  I'm going to make sure she gets your web site info since I think she'll find it very useful.

Cubby-Blind Collie/Border Collie Mix, Las Vegas

Cubby, is a male, 9 months old, Collie/Border Collie mix, and weighs 75 pounds (big boy!)
Cubby came to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary as a small pup, blind at birth or born with extremely limited vision.  Cubby suffers from Collie Eye Anomaly, and is now completely blind in both eyes.  Cubby was adopted to a home soon after he first came to us, but was recently returned because of
his owner's personal difficulties.

Cubby is an unbelievably sweet tempered, playful, gentle, and kind dog.  He absolutely loves to play with other dogs, puppies, cats, and just about anything else.  Cubby currently lives in foster care in Las Vegas, Nevada with his foster Mom, two dog playmates, and a cat.  Cubby attends obedience school and goes to the dog park every other night to play.  Cubby knows basic commands including come, stay, heel, stop, and step, and does extremely well on a leash.  Cubby is not fearful of new situations, but rather welcomes everything new with a sense of adventure and confidence.  He loves to meet new people, and is extremely gregarious.  Most people don't even know he is blind until told!

Cubby is looking for an active home, preferably with a family that has somebody home most of the day and has another dog.  Although Cubby is extremely gentle, he would probably do best with older children only, as he still has a puppy's tendency to jump.

Jeanne, Cubby rescue person at Best Friends, let me know Cubby found a "FANTASTIC" forever home Here's an part of her letter.

Just wanted to let you know that Cubby was adopted a few weeks ago by a FANTASTIC family in Las Vegas.  After he was returned to us, we put him into foster care in Las Vegas, and his foster mom was great.  She took him to obedience school donated by a local trainer, and Cubby excelled - he quickly graduated to advanced classes.  She also took him to the dog park every day, where he became quite well known.  And, she started having him qualified as a pet therapy dog - everybody loved him!!  He drew so much attention, two local news stations ran several stories on him.  Finally, a great family met him at Petsmart, fell in love with him, and took him home.  They have two other dogs, and the wife continues the canine therapy and frequent dog park visits.  The husband has a little putting green in the back yard and, when Cubby isn't playing with his other buddies, he spends his time chasing golf balls and grabbing them before they go into the hole.  He's very funny, and very happy.

Jack-One eyed Coonhound  Cleveland, OH

Date Posted 9/21/01

Hi everyone,
I have in foster care a dog who just had one eye removed. He will be looking for a special kind
of home shortly. Here is his story.
Jack is a very special 6 year-old Coonhound in need of a very special home. A kind person found Jack living in a dangerous industrial area of Cleveland. It took weeks for her to capture him and finally gain his trust. Jack was so tired of running that he lay down on the rapid transit tracks and wouldn't
move for the approaching train. The conductor stopped the train and chased Jack off of the tracks. Jack's left eye has been removed because of on old stab wound, but he compensates for his loss of sight quite well as long as no one approaches him suddenly from his blind side. Jack is very friendly with other dogs and with women. He is absolutely terrified of some men, so Jack's home should be with women or with a gentle, understanding man who will go slow with Jack and gain his trust. Jack is in good health overall, but he is currently going through heartworm treatment. When his treatment is over, he
will be ready to move into your loving, caring home.

Deborah Workman let me know Jack found his forever on Nov 4, 2001. Here's her update:

"I wanted to let you know that Jack went to his forever, wonderful home on Sunday. A couple in Denver responded to Jack's story, and after checking them out completely, we agreed to meet half way. So Jack, his foster mom, and I met them in Columbia, MO. What a happy ending to a very sad beginning. Jack had his eye removed and went through heartworm treatment, and he is now one happy boy living with another Walker Hound, a Rottie mix (who loves him), an old Cocker, and some cats. Thanks for helping to get the word out on Jack, so you can take him off of your adoption pages now if you would like."

Iris-9week old Blind Chocolate Lab-Monterey, California

Date Posted 10/15/01

My husband and I rescued a 9 week old chocolate lab over the weekend. Female.  Very very sweet (my husband is becoming QUITE attached!!).  We already have two dogs (one hearing and one deafie), so a third would be too much.  The owners were going to send her to the humane society (and we know what her fate would be as they are a *kill* shelter).  She is way too sweet to let that happen.

She was the only one of the litter who was born blind, but we think she sees shades of gray.  She will be going to the vets tomorrow to start her puppy shots and see if there is anything that can be done regarding her vision.  She is great with my two female aussies:  play bowing and play growling to get them to romp with her.  She is the color of milk chocolate with a cute little white chin!! We are crate training her and whimpers when she has to go out.  She comes when we clap our hands, wagging her tail wildly as she trots towards the sound!  She is very smart and will be a wonderful addition to someone willing to give her the extra care she needs.  She is located in Monterey, California.

Iris went to her new forever home in Illinois the first week of Nov.

Harley-Visually Impaired Boxer-Central KY

Date Posted 9/15/01

Harley is a Boxer boy that came to us from a shelter here in KY. Harley has some vision, but is classified as blind. He learned the house in about 10 minutes and is coming and going like a pro. Harley is housebroken and crate trained. He is great with the other Boxers, but cats will not work. Harley is a smart boy that is looking for a new family to love him and take good care of him. He promised to give love and kisses in return!

Kelli  of Central KY Boxer Rescue Inc let me know that Harley had found his forever home with her.  She loves him too much to let him go.

Pearl-10 month old Blind/Deaf Australian Shepherd Mix-Tx

Date Posted 3/15/2000

Pearl is a rescue that was taking in by the Houston Afghan rescue. To be honest I am not sure how much there adoption fees are, but I don't think it would matter for the right person, because one look and you would fall in love with her. Here is her description and story: Pearl was given to Afghan rescue for fostering by a good hearted person who picked up a pregnant stray. She is one of 13 mixed puppies born to an Australian Cattle Dog mama.

Pearl is in desperate need of a very special home. She was born both blind and deaf. She is now about 10 mos old and weighs 40 lbs. Pearl is both crate trained and leash trained. She runs with a group of Afghans and is totally unafraid of almost anything. She is able to maneuver  around the house so well that you would almost mistake her for a sighted dog. She is very intelligent, loving and fiesty. This little girl needs a home with someone who will spend time training her and who will keep her feeling secure.

Pearl now has a special home and is happy.

Blue-Night Blindness-Aussie-Houston,TX

Date Posted 8/10/01

Blue was found as a stray.  He is a purebred Aussie called a Lethal White. Both his mother and father were blue merles, the object to get cute merle puppies with blue eyes.  One in 4 come out with this genetic deformity which causes blindness and deafness in the offspring.  Blue is worthy of a great
home.  Despite his disabilities of being partially blind and deaf, he plays, acts, completely normal, to the point that you might not notice any disabilities.  He is 1 1/2 years old, completely housebroken, and not destructive.  He can be left alone unattended in the house all day.  He enjoys the company of other dogs, but is mostly a "people dog".  He cannot deal with isolation and tends to follow his owner/foster or another dog and loves interaction.  Blue gets up close to his friends, so he can hear and see them.  His vision is okay during the day, but much worse at night.  Contact e-mail is tereje@aol.com or Warren, his foster, at 281-361-4964, located in Houston, Texas.

Chopper-7 year old Blind Malamute-Sanpete County, Utah

Date Posted 8/29/01

Foster or forever home needed ASAP

Now I'm asking for referral to resource lists, especially lists that will let me seek an adopter or long term foster home for a blind Malamute, who is presently in Sanpete Shelter in Utah. Sanpete County is rural Utah, 1 1/2 hours from Provo, 2 1/2 hours from SLC. The dog's name is Chopper. He is very pretty and reportedly very sweet. His "kind" owner left Chopper and his elderly chow companion with Animal Control. Chopper is understandably confused and unhappy. But his temperament remains stable. A forever home would be a dream come true. I have pictures. Contact me at dan@industryinet.com they can call at 979-865-5953.

The Alaskan Malamute Assistance League, which is the national rescue for Alaskan Malamutes, does not have a rescue affiliate in Utah. If we did, we would take him into rescue. Instead we are trying to find an adopter for Chopper. We will work cooperatively with the Sanpete Shelter as we have done in the past. In essence, if we find a prospective adopter, AMAL will screen the home, help with transport, and provide follow up to assure that Chopper settles well into his new family.  http://www.malamuterescue.org

My daughter runs a spay/neuter program in a rural town in Virginia. She also helps people place their pets when they are no long wanted--though we aren't a shelter and are  rarely able to do foster--the pets stay with the owners until a new home  is found, but we maintain a
website and get the word out about the  pets.

Well we have an extra sad case that needs a home ASAP. She is  an 8 week old mix--possibly pit mix--she is brindled, but not smooth coated like a pit--so something else is in there too. She was hit by a car about a week and a half ago and has recovered everywhere except her sight. The vets feel she will always be blind due to damage when she was hit, but  otherwise she will be fine. The so-called owner no
longer wants her since she's NOW blind! I won't go into what I think of people like that--but
anyway, she is with the people until a home is found and we would like to get her out of there ASAP before she gets hit again or  dumped in a kill shelter. I will have pictures,> possibly tomorrow, but for now if someone could post this for me on the blind dogs list, I  would appreciate it. She is in Franklin, VA--and some transportation can be arranged to surrounding areas.

Gabe-Blind 6 month old Aussie Auburn, AL

Date Posted 9/21/01

Gabe is a blind 6 month old, male Australian Shepherd pup.  His blindness is the result of breeding two merle Australian shepherds, which often produces dogs with disabilities.  He was left in the drop-off area of Lee County Shelter in Auburn, AL the last week of June.  Gabe has been in a foster home, where he has been housebroken and crate-trained.  Very affectionate and gentle, Gabe likes all dogs, cats, and children.  He is playful and loves chew toys!  We are eager for Gabe to find a patient and
loving family who can give him the permanent home he deserves.  He will return love and loyalty full measure! Contact Jack Fisher, Lee County Humane Shelter, Auburn, Alabama  (334)

Pete-Blind Pitbull-Fairfield, CA

Hi how are you doing?  I am from a volunteer animal control center in Fairfield, CA.  We have a pitbull I have named Pete that is really so, so sweet!  He may have been used as a bait dog.  He loves people.  He has blinded and has a tail that he wages when you say hello.

Pete was a shelter and Kathy was getting very worried about him.  I was thrilled when she wrote me on 10/6 to let me know the following:

Dear, Linda thanks to your wonderful web site Pete is in Hollywood. In the most wonderful home you could ask for. They really love him. By putting Pete on your web site it helped him find a home. He's a very special dog and his blindness hasn't made him any different than any other dog, that makes him more special. Because of people like you these dogs that no one wants are wanted. I just wish that I could thank you more, you were a tramendous help and I thank you again.

Tonto-Visually Impaired GSD-Los Angeles, CA

Tonto - Visually impaired 5 year old male/neutered German Shepherd Dog, being sponsored by the German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles, California

Every now and then, a dog comes along that really tugs at all of our volunteers' heartstrings.
One such dog is Tonto, a wonderful black and red 5 year old boy. From the day we rescued Tonto, we noticed something different about him. He startled easily, and would not notice other dogs or people coming up to him until they were very close. After a visit to our vet, we confirmed that Tonto's eyesight is very limited. Although he seems to see shapes and shadows, he often does not recognize those shapes and shadows until they get very close. He does not like to have people or animals come up to him suddenly because it frightens him.

Tonto has been in boarding, and we've learned that he likes to be with another dog who can help him to get around. Poor Tonto is lost when his dog buddy is not in the kennel with him. We feel that Tonto would do best in a quiet home with a solid routine that he can be accustomed to and rely on. A home without stairs or a pool would work best. Tonto would love to have another dog in the home that can help him to get around. He would also do best in a home without children.  He is neutered and up-to-date on his vaccinations. Tonto was rescued from a Southern California animal shelter wearing a very expensive and elaborate collar, but NO ID TAGS. Our repeated efforts to locate his owner have been unsuccessful.

Heather from GSD rescue let me know Tonto had been adopted

Gizmo-Visually Impaired Corgi-Downers Grove, IL

Gizmo was rescued in May by the Lakeshore Pembroke Welsh Corgi Rescue Group.   He was in a shelter in danger of being put down, when we stepped in to rescue him. According to the shelter, the reason for owner turn in was a divorce and a change in the living situation at the home.

Gizzy is an 8 year old Corgi Mix.  Gizmo is neutered and up to date on all
shots, as well as on heartworm preventative.  He is housebroken.  He is a very sweet, gentle and mild mannered dog.  Gizmo is happiest to be in the same room with the people in the house and laying near your feet or next to
you on the couch if he is invited up.  He is very gentle and according to the shelter where he was rescued from, was in a family with children and was very good with them.  (I do not have children, so I can't comment on this behavior, but given his calm demeanor, I think it would be true.)  Gizmo knows
basic obedience: he walks well on a leash, knows sit, down and stay, and even will sit up and beg for a treat.  He is crate trained, and eagerly goes into his crate if you say, "Kennel".  Gizzy gets nervous when left alone, but if put in his crate when the house is empty, he feels safe and will cause no
problems.  Gizmo gets along great with other dogs and cats; he loves to play games of "chase me in a tight little circle in the middle of the room".

Gizmo is approx. 75% blind of unknown cause, having mostly distance vision, but very little vision up close.  He gets around wonderfully in the home, only highstepping slightly before getting to the stairs.

Karen Sporny let me know that Gizmo is on his way to his new home the week of 9/26/01 She hopes to  send pictures of this happy little fellow in his new forever home soon

Frasier-Blind Lhasa-West LA, CA

This 7 yr old, 16 lb, precious little boy was dumped in a shelter by his owners because his eyesight is impaired. But don't let that stop you from reading on.   Frasier has a golden tan coat of silk and a face that could melt Alaska in a second flat.  He is absolutely one of the most beautiful, gentle Lhasas we have ever had at Lhasa Happy Homes  -- and he gets around just fine!   He walks pretty well on a leash and is learning to climb up and down the stairs!  When he looks at you with those big brown eyes, he will
capture your heart.  He'll give you little kisses, put his head in your lap and show his love and
appreciation once he feels safe in your arms.  He's likely housebroken...as soon as he knows where he's supposed to "do his business!!"  A special home with a lot of love and TLC will give this very special boy another chance at a great life, which he richly deserves.  We will consider transporting Frasier to the right home.
Thank you so much :)

Senior Chihuahua blind and deaf-Sacramento, CA

I am an Animal Control Officer in Sacramento.  Just over 2 weeks ago I was called to pick up an old dog that some people found in a field.  He is a very old Chihuahua, he is missing half his teeth, is nearly blind, and pretty deaf, and is missing some hair.  He gets around pretty well for his age, he barks when he needs to go outside for business, and just really wants to sit near you, and let you rub his chin, or sleep in a comfy bed with a blanket. (He already has a favorite one at my house) . He does snore softly.  He doesn't like to be outside by himself for too long, so he barks some more to get you to bring him in. Even though he can't really see or hear you comming, he has NEVER offered even a snip when startled.  He has a good smeller, sniff out the food and even crunches (perfers) small kibbles.  Pretty cute since the teeth on his left side are all gone.  He just flips it around until it contacts teeth and the he munches away.

It was my original thought that he wandered away from his house, and his owners would look at the county shelter for him.  To no avail.  I also placed a found ad in the local paper, hoping to locate owners...to no avail.  After the required stray period I went to the shelter and brought him home. (it is way too stressful there for a guy like this).  I then went to the neighborhood where he was found, knocked on doors, leftnotes for people that were not home...again hoping to locate the owners.  I believe that someone, somewhere is missing this little guy, just a much as he is missing them.  I am sure he belonged to some senior citizen somewhere....again to no avail.

I am now at a point that I am not quite sure what to do.  He does not deserve to die because he got lost, or sadly to think..got dumped.  He has brought someone somewhere many happy years.  I work 10 hours a day at the shelter plus drive time.  I need assistance in getting him placed, or fostered, something.   I am willing to assist with transportation. Any assistance or ideas you may have will be greatly appreciated, by both of us. Thanking you in advance. Cindy Walden

Wonderful news this little guy has found a forever home.  Here is Cindy's Walden update.

To all the people that cared so much, It is with great happiness that I want to share with you that I have placed the little blind and deaf Chihuahua.  It was thru the help of many many caring people that this  all happened.  It all began with a posting at  www.blinddogs.com, from there I got messages, offers and such a outpour of care and concern that it truly took me back. CRT (Chihuahua Rescue Transport - Jennifer at    took him into their program and we were working to transport him to the bay area for foster and placement.  The local TV channel contacted me and wanted to run an article on him, we did so.  It was thru this article that I was able to interview prospective adopters and place the dog here in the local Sacramento area.  He has a wonderful new loving home and will live there very comfortably from now on. I have and will continue to encourage those who truly want to adopt a senior or disabled dog to check at their local shelters as these dogs are there on a regular basis, and most often are not given a chance at being adopted.  Prospective adopters must realize that there will be ongoing vet care required for these special dogs, but they are worth it.  If  as the adopter you are sincere, continue to work with the staff at the shelter and prove to them that you are serious, and will provide for this animal. Again, I want to thank each and every one of you for your help in making this a success story, it would not have been possible without people like each one of you. You are all truly special people.

Neo-Visually Impaired Terrier Mix-Los Angeles, Ca

This is Neo, a very sweet terrier mix (the shelter says chihuahua cross, I say more likely beagle and rat terrier) who was rescued from the North Central Los Angeles pound this week. He is a small adult dog, 8 years old, probably weighs about 17-20 pounds or so.

At the moment he is suffering from cataracts in both eyes, but due to the generosity of a benefactor he will hopefully soon be having surgery to restore his vision as fully as possible. Anyone interested in taking him, however, should be aware he will probably require a lot of attention during and after the process; there are many medications he will need for his eyes to have the best possible chance of healing. Though the cost is being covered, his new owner needs to be someone who can commit to administering the long-term care.

Neo has been recently neutered, has had his shots, and is "microchipped". Though little is known about his background (his owner turned him in at North Central because he said he had “too many”), Neo seems to have had a really rough life. Despite this, he is a loving little sweetie. Can you help give him a second chance?

Neo's Rescuer Mary let me know that they had fallen in love with Neo and were going to keep him.  She says he is an amazing dog.

Lab/Akita Puppy-Southern, CA

Folks, there's a blind lab/akita mix STILL at shelter.  And I've attached photos to this and I'm sure Linda will have them updated at her site as well.  This dog does NOT look akita at all.  Looks like a yellow lab mix. Here are pictures for your site to add to the listing you have (lab/akita mix puppy). I have no clue if it's been saved or what.  She is STILL AVAILABLE!!! She has VERY LIMITED TIME LEFT! Shelter phone is (818)756-9325 and her impound # is A416534.  If you want her, we can arrange for her to be pulled and for a transport to wherever you are from southern California where she sits awaiting someone to take her.  She is a PUPPY!  PLEASE ::begging with puppy sad eyes::

Donna Palen let us know even though there had been several people asking to adopt her this little cutie was adopted out of the shelter by  John and Carolyn (of Cavy rescue) as their own dog.

Newly is a miracle dog.  You see, Newly has NO eyes.  The amazing part?  Her other senses are so keen that it almost makes up for her lack of sight.  She seems to get along just fine with the help of her seeing eye dog, Sandy, and, as you can tell from pix1 and pix2, she's very playful.  Getting photos of Newly was a challenge because she followed me everywhere -- never leaving my side.

Newly is 5 yr old and has white and tan coat color. She was brought to the shelter because she killed a cat.  She loves people.
Newly is at the  Watauga Humane Society located in Boone, NC

This was crossposted off the Watauga Humane Society Web site:

Australian Shepherd ~ White with Tan
It's official and final.  Sandy and Newly have been adopted and will remain together forever.  They became our local celebrities.  Their pictures appeared in several newspapers and we heard from so many caring people.  We received emails, one volunteer stop by to walk them daily.  Sandy and Newly have a wonderful new home, right here in Watauga County.  We're so happy for them.
