Arf!  Woof!

Candy - blind 16 yr old Shih Tzu
Bradenton, Florida (with South Florida Shih Tzu Rescue)

Posted 3/06/2002

Candy is a blind 16 yr. old Shih Tzu who needs a home for the last few years of her life. She is housebroken, quiet and very sweet. She is also very smart and finds her way around well. She learned the doggie door in just 3 days! She loves to eat! Anything! and sleeps alot, really no trouble. She needs eye drops for glacoma three times a day and is being treated for a skin infection currently.

Candy's owner took her to the Humane Society to be put down and left her after 16 years of companionship because he said she was blind, deaf and going potty on the floor. The Humane Society called rescue. She is blind, not deaf and does not go potty on the floor! She loves to use the doggie door and wonder around outside in the big fenced yard. She has cataracts and glaucoma in one eye. She is receiving medication daily. She also has a skin infection that is doing much better since being on good food and getting baths. Candy sleeps most of the time, she loves to be petted and held too. She is very overweight as she loves to eat. Very sweet girl.

Katie - Blind Senior Shih Tzu       (also see Toby below)
Georgia

Posted 4/02/2002

Katie is blind and was picked up wandering the streets of Cherokee County in Georgia. When she came to us she was one big matted mess and was covered in fleas. It took three doses of worm medicine to get rid of all her worms. She had an infection in her only eye, the other eye had already been surgically removed and she was in heat. Katie had been at the pound for about a month and no one was interested in her because of her age and her blindness. The pound pleaded for someone to take her before they had to put her to sleep. Katie has been spayed, tested HW negative and is on prevention and is up to date on shots. I have had Katie and Toby since after Christmas. Everyone loves Katie at adoption, but that BIG hearted person has not been found. Katie has glaucoma in her only eye and it will have to be removed when we collect enough money to have the surgery done. I don't think Katie is very old, maybe around 8 years. Her teeth are still white and she doesn't sleep most of the day like older dogs do. She likes to explore her surroundings or more likely in search of food. Katie loves to eat and was over weight when we got her. She loves to be held like a baby and have her belly rubbed. She will stay still in your arms for as long as you want to hold her. She gets excited when she knows you are preparing her food and she barks at you to hurry up. She likes car rides and is very good in the doggie car seat. Katie does have skin allergies and has to be wiped off after coming in from outside so that the grass doesn't irritate her skin. I have her on over the counter antihistamines. She has dry eye and I'm currently putting drops in her eye, but overall she is in good health. Katie weighs about 11 pounds and she is grey and white.

Toby - Blind Senior Shih Tzu          (also see Katie above)
Georgia

Posted 4/02/2002

Toby is blind due to a severe trauma to the head, possibly hit by a car. His little mouth is crooked and he is weak in his back leg on one side, but gets around fine. Toby was also found wandering the streets of Cherokee County. When I picked Katie up they asked me to take Toby also because he was scheduled to go down. Toby was filthy and full of fleas, but he wasn't matted like Katie. Toby had a large tumor on his belly and a tumor on his elbow. Toby has been neutered and the tumors were removed. He tested HW negative and is on prevention and is up to date on his shots. Toby was a lot more active before his neutering. When we had him checked a heart murmur rated 3-4 was found. An ultrasound, x-rays and blood work were done and we discovered his has endocardiosis. He is taking Enacard and Spironolactone. I have been told to keep him from getting too warm because panting is tough on the heart and also from getting too cold because the blood vessels constrict making his heart work harder. We believe he is older than Katie maybe 10 years because of his medical conditions and his teeth are darker but not bad. Toby has black and white wavy hair. He tries running outside, even though he can't see where he is going. He is being treated for dry eye. One eye looks normal but I've been told there is scar tissue in the eye. The other eye is sunken. Toby is independent and is too macho to be held but he does like to be beside you to know you are there. I have never heard him bark while awake, but he does bark in his sleep sometimes. He gets excited over his food and occasionally mistakes fingers for food. He is a wiggle worm when you try to groom him. He likes going to adoption and doesn't want to sit still. He likes exploring, but when adoption is over he is exhausted and sleeps all the way home. Toby weighs about 13 ½ lbs. He is a very sweet little boy.

Thank you, Kathy

Baxter - blind pit bull
 Middletown NY

Posted 5/02/2002

Baxter is a blind pit bull - TWO STRIKES against him - He almost succumbed to a THIRD STRIKE - being in a shelter that is forced to euthanize because of huge numbers of abandoned animals. Fortunately many concerned 'Baxter lovers contacted us and this sweet boy is now looking for a home. He is, of course, welcome to share 'our' home forever but I am hoping that he has an Angel out there in cyberspace who will want to give him his own home. He quickly learns his way around a new area, gives many kisses, is housebroken and extremely cheerful.

Currently residing at Pets Alive in Middletown NY.

Hannah - blind  5 yr old Sheltie
Raleigh, NC

Posted 5/03/2002

Hannah is five years old and was surrendered to our rescue program because she was not adjusting to the new baby in her family. Hannah has vision loss due to Progressive Rod Cone degeneration a result of inherited retinal degeneration. Hannah has trouble seeing you if you approach her from the side. She is a larger sheltie weighing in at 49 pounds. She has a very sweet disposition. She loves to run and play in the yard and will make a great companion for a family with children over 12. Because of the progressive nature of Hannah's disease a home with only a few stairs would be best.

Our website. www.triangleshelties.com

Applications can be made on our website. Hannah is currently located in Raleigh, NC - we will do an out of state adoption if the adopter is willing to pick up or pay for shipping.
A home check and reference check will be performed on any applicant.
