Thunder - Blind Pit Bull
Elmsford, NY

Date Posted 3/1/2002

9 years, approx. 40 pounds, male

Thunder is a loving, gentle, senior Pit Bull. He is about 40 pounds and approximately 9 years old. Thunder is a chubby fellow who is happiest when snuggling with you ...or if you're not available, he is content to find a cozy place in the sun where he can snooze away until you have time for him. When you're not busy, Thunder will ask you for a belly rub ...and a neck rub and ...an ear rub ...well, you get the idea. Thunder appears to be housebroken, and enjoys going for slow (very, very slow) walks. He is virtually toothless, but has managed to keep a nice round belly despite his lack of teeth. Thunder is also blind. He needs someone to guide him around new surroundings. However, once he's learned the layout of your home, Thunder shouldn't have difficult moving about on his own. He has a gentle, mellow personality. Thunder is the sort of dog who gets along well with everyone ...he has several good doggy friends as well as human ones. He will make a wonderful companion who is looking for a calm, affectionate companion dog.

Buddy - Partially blind Heeler or Heeler mix
Athens, TX

Posted 3/06/2002

A beautiful large (about 60#) male dog - Buddy - partially blind but able to play ball - is in need of a home. He was hit by a car and is being cared for at a vet's office in Athens. He is healthy, has had all his shots, is heartworm negative (on preventive).

He has red heeler markings, is about 2 years old, very playful and has a slightly submissive personality.

He is not yet neutered...but this can be worked out by this wonderful vet who has been treating and boarding him at her own cost. Click here to see more pictures of Buddy.

Clarence - seven-month old neutered chocolate lab/pitbull/boxer mix
NY

Posted 3/06/2002

I am trying to find a home for a wonderful dog. Clarence is a seven-month old neutered chocolate lab/pitbull/boxer mix. He is a lovely brown with a red/brown nose and a white blaze on the back of his neck and on his nose. His chest and toes are white. He has beautiful green/gray eyes.

He loves people, is very affectionate, and is very good with other dogs and curious about cats in a nice (but perhaps from a cat's point of view) overly enthusiastic way.

Clarence is a special needs boy as his sensory skills: vision, hearing, and smell are developing slowly due to severe malnutrition at 2 weeks old. While he was originally diagnosed blind, he has gained back the majority of his vision in the last 1 1/2 months. His hearing is excellent, but his locator is off. In adjusting to developing vision and hearing he can get overly excited responding to what he sees, or hears but can't locate well yet ---- which is why small children and a "busy" household" might be more difficult for him. He would do best in a one dog household or with a very "laid back" companion dog or cat. He loves to nap to classical music, Frank Sinatra, and Ella F. and sit on a sofa to cuddle.

He has had all his shots and is doing very well walking on a leash. He sleeps all night in his crate without accidents, but will need attention on housebreaking, tends to have accidents when overly excited.

Please contact Jane or Ellen at 212 675-9454 if you are interested in finding out about adopting Clarence. Also, please pass this information on to others you know who might be interested in adopting.

Missy - partially blind 5 or 6 yr old Shih Tzu Mix
Bradenton, Florida (with South Florida Shih Tzu Rescue)

Posted 3/09/2002

Missy had scabs on her eyes from dry eye that was not treated and was in a shelter in Alabama. A lady got her out, she was adopted by someone here in Florida who kept her for 4 days and returned her to rescue. She is currently getting medicine 4 times a day, it is a series of clean, hold, medicate, hold, medicate, hold...we are hoping for some sight to be regained but just don't know. I think it may be improving as Missy is socializing a little more lately.

UPDATE 10/05/2002
Missy now only needs her eyes cleaned twice a day and cyclosporine with Moisture Eyes often. She's improved.

Tiger - partially blind 8 yr old Lhasa Apso
Bradenton, Florida (with South Florida Shih Tzu Rescue)

Posted 3/09/2002

Tiger is a Lhasa about 8 yr. old, he is partially blind and has been abused. He has been in rescue/foster care for a little over a year now. He is sensitive to hands being around his face and to other dogs being too close as he can not see, he has been a fear biter in the past, but has improved immensely. He is housebroken, likes to be petted but you have to let him come to you. Generally a nice boy. Barks at the cat sometimes, likes to sleep on the lanai and in the bathroom on his bed.

He gets ear and eye infections sometimes due to allergies and we give him vitamin supplements and Benadryl...he hates his ears cleaned and to get eye drops. We muzzle him when he is groomed and he almost always does just fine, but we like to be safe too.

Tiger was a stray and obviously abused dog. He was full of fleas, dirt and biggest mat my groomer said she had ever seen. He had skin, ear and eye infections. He was a biter and had to be muzzled to get his medications for 3 weeks. He still does not like hands near his face to well. He trembles when I scratch the top of his head or pet it. He does let me pet him on the body now, however, because he was a fear biter, I always talk to him when petting him. He likes to come up to you and ask to be petted. He is a loner mostly and just wants some loving and a good quiet home with no children and best if not many other pets. He may need some time to adjust.
