Bridgett - 6 yr old Shih Tzu (limited vision)
Kanab, Utah

Posted 10/23/2002

Once neglected, but still willing to love again!

This sweetie is Bridgett, a six-year-old Shih Tzu who came to the sanctuary recently from a local shelter. Bridgett had been picked up as a roaming stray and when her owner was located, they simply didn’t want her back. This was a lucky break for Bridgett since she was found with overgrown toenails and a coat so matted that food and an old hair curler were stuck in it! Bridgett also was fed primarily human table scraps which accounts for her being overweight.

Currently in a loving foster home, Bridgett is learning that doggy food is scrumptious and she is still willing to love again. Bridgett is good with other dogs and cats and loves people, but please no small children. She does have limited hearing because of previous ear infections that had gone untreated. Bridgett is on medicated eye drops possibly for life and has limited vision because of an eye condition that was left untreated as well. Bridgett is also borderline for Cushing's disease and thus while currently she is not on any medication, she will need to be rechecked in six months and may need medication for life at that time. Bridgett is a beautiful leash-trained girl who loves attention, loves to be cuddled and especially loves her toys!

Bridgett is Listed at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah www.bestfriends.org

BG - young blue female Chow Chow (glaucoma)
St. Louis, MO

Posted 11/3/2002

BG needs a caring home. BG is a blue Chow Chow who is not yet 2 years old (11/14 is her birthdate). She was purchased as show qualitiy, has been shown, and is pointed. She has a wonderful temperament.. she is very sweet. She has developed glaucoma in her left eye. She is being treated aggressively with 6 kinds of medication, and this treatment will continue for another week and a half, and if no improvement, her eye will be removed to lessen the pain. I understand from the veterinarians that most people will not be able to immediately see that she has lost the eye because of all her fur. Attached is a picture of her. Because we have 16 dogs here, we feel that BG belongs in a home with a couple that has the time to attend to her and give her the time and attention she deserves. We don't have cats, and do not know how she will react around them. Our grandchildren come over and altho she has sniffed them with us right there with them, they have never played together so to speak. Chows don't normally play with children much.

We are located near St. Louis, MO. Our telephone number is 636-566-8003. My e-mail addy is: myrna@michelob.wustl.edu

Thanks for any help. It would be nice to get her established before she gets much older.

Spirit - visually impaired GSD

Posted 11/21/2002

We've got Spirit, yes we do!!!  We've got Spirit, how 'bout you???!!!

Meet Spirit, a beautiful and very special 6 month old boy...

German Shepherd Rescue received a call from a kind-hearted citizen who lives next door to a breeder.  It seems that the breeder kept the remaining puppy from their last litter locked in a cage 24/7.  After witnessing this cruel treatment, this neighbor called the rescue and asked if we could help this special boy.  Before we could respond, the breeder had called Animal Control to have the pup picked up and brought to the shelter to be put down.  Why?  Because Spirit lost most of his vision due to abuse by the very people who brought him into this world and were supposed to be caring for him!  After hearing this sad story, we knew there was NO WAY were we going to allow this sweet dog to die in the shelter.  Our Founder rushed over to the shelter personally to rescue this special boy.

Spirit is now in the hands of one of our volunteers and he is doing great!!!  He is good with other dogs, cats, and kids.  His vision loss does not slow him down at all!!!  He happily romps with the other dogs in the family and, with a little help, navigated the doggie door.  He will also follow your voice.  If you call him, he comes right to you  -- just make sure there are no obstacles in his way.  He can see some shapes and outlines if they are dark in color.  In just a short amount of time, he learns how to navigate around his environment.  And he will look you right in the eye, which looks straight into your heart...

With all that he has been through, this pup loves his people, and boy does he love to cuddle.  He is the most trusting, loving, sweet boy you could ever meet.  We named him Spirit because, boy, he has plenty!!!  Spirit is now looking for his forever family.  He would do best in a home with another dog, or a stay-at-home person.  His birthday is April 15th.

Are you the lucky special someone this special boy is looking to spend his life devoted to?  To meet Spirit, please go to http://www.gsrescue.org/application/application.htm and fill out our online application, or call (714) 206-9002 or (714) 993-9594 or (818) 384-6047 and ask about Spirit.

Sam - 9-year-old spayed female Australian Terrier
Maryland /Pa border

Posted December 23/2002

Sam is a 9-year-old spayed female Aussie, blue and tan. She is blind due to SARDS but is otherwise in excellent health and condition. She's completely house-trained and up-to-date on all necessary veterinary care. She's very affectionate, enjoys snuggling, gets along well with all humans. She walks on lead beautifully despite her loss of vision and enjoys long rambles outdoors. She gets along with cats and male dogs. She is okay with other females as long as they do not push her or act agressively towards her. After some preliminary anxiety she is content to ride in a car, especially if she can lean against her human. Sam can go upstairs but needs to be carried down them as she has never mastered going downstairs. She has no destructive habits and enjoys her crate.

She needs a home because her owner has become incapacitated due to illness and is now living in a nursing home. She is unable to look after her, though it breaks her heart to say so.
Sam is currently boarded at her Vet's office in PA near the Maryland /Pa border . We are receiving reports that Sam has adapted uncannily to her condition. She hardly ever gets anxious or panics. She seems able to find her way even in strange locations using human (at first) to guide her by voice. Her owner even taught her the game "hot and cold" to let her know when she's close to something or too far away. She's a really happy little dog  with lots of personality.

We hope to find a home for this special little dog where she can be showered with the love and attention that her previous owner gave her. If you are interested in adopting Sam, please contact Marsha Gray @ socrossva@msn.com or call 804 541-6958.
